Recess-mounting mirror cabinet or surface-mounted mirror cabinet? Advantages and disadvantages at a glance.

You have decided to buy a mirror cabinet? Very nice! But before you can really get down to business, there is still the question in the room whether the mirror cabinet should be mounted on the wall (surface mounting) or in the wall (recess mounting). Both variants have their advantages and disadvantages, which we will examine in more detail in this article.

Mirror, mirror… Mirror cabinet

The bathroom mirror is our daily companion. Even though we hardly notice it, we need it all the time. If you have ever tried to prepare for the day without it, you will know what we are talking about. According to a British study, women spend up to two years of their lives in front of the mirror and men catch up! Mirror cabinets are particularly practical, where toothbrush, make-up and razor can be stored comfortably and invisibly. But is it better to mount it flush-mounted or would it be better to mount it directly on the wall?

The surface-mounted mirror cabinet

The surface mounting of a mirror cabinet is done directly on the wall. This variant requires less effort and can also be implemented more easily in rented apartments. Normally, you only have to drill the appropriate holes and the mirror cabinet is installed. The electrician has to take special care of the light connections again, as these have to be connected to the direct power supply. The disadvantage of the surface mounting is primarily the optics. Of course, there are numerous shapely models such as the mirror cabinet Lumara, which look very good despite a surface mounting. But if you like it puristic and have the possibility, a flush mounting is the better choice.

Advantages:

  • uncomplicated installation
  • convertible into rental apartments
  • usually cheaper than the flush-mounted version
  • Smaller distance between user and mirror

Cons:

  • The body of the cabinet is clearly visible

The recess-mounted mirror cabinet

For recess-mounted installation, the mirror cabinet is recessed directly into the wall. Here a niche is prepared in which the light mirror cabinet can be inserted. In simple terms, this means that the wall is hollowed out a little to make room for the cabinet. The mirror cabinet is inserted directly into the brickwork and thus disappears almost completely into the wall, making the mirror cabinet virtually float.
This effect is particularly impressive with the right lighting. For example, our mirror cabinet “Quadro” with its 45 degree ambience light, which skilfully frames the entire mirror, brings the right lighting mood into your bathroom and enhances the illusion of a floating mirror. As you may already have guessed, such an installation requires a little more effort. Especially with solid construction walls.
As already mentioned, it can be implemented almost exclusively in the property or by arrangement with the landlord.

Advantages:

  • Almost invisibly hidden in the wall
  • The mirror cabinet seems to float
  • Clear and minimalist design

Cons:

  • Construction requires higher effort and costs

Both variants offer advantages and disadvantages. If you have your own home, recess mounting may be the better choice for you. However, even the classic surface-mounted installation offers various attractive possibilities that have nothing to do with the unattractive plastic design of days gone by. We would be happy to advise you about the various options.
